The Monster Inside Me is an interactive e-book that highlights mental health and wellness, with a specific focus on the everyday struggle for people with mental illnesses. The project was inspired by a close friend who's been struggling with mental disorder for many years. She described mental illness as a "monster" living inside of her, follows her everywhere and completed messed up her life. However, my friend isn't the only suffering from mental disorder. According to CDC, about 1 in 4 adults in America suffers from a diagnosable mental illness, that's equivalent to 48.5 million people. Beyond the fact that this is such a common disease, people with mental illness are often challenged doubly. On one hand, their symptoms can often interfere with the everyday life. On the other hand, they are challenged by the bias associate with the disease. As a result, people with mental illness are more likely to be robbed of the opportunities that define a quality life. Through illustration, animation, and interactive experience, Behind the Door aims to explore and understand mental health; breaks down the social stigmas and prevent suicide through individual education.
