The Surface Autonomous Vehicle for Emergency Rescue (SAVER) will assist with long-range search and rescue efforts in the event of a contingency landing (launch abort, weather contingency etc.) of NASA’s Orion spacecraft. For the purposes of the SAVER challenge, the Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) will home in on and autonomously navigate to the distress signal which will be transmitted by the Orion capsule. The SAVER will also carry emergency supplies as well as atmospheric sensors to detect harmful chemicals during rescue.
