Enterprise Information Management (EIM)

Enterprise information management (EIM) is a set of business processes, disciplines and practices that create a framework used to manage the information created from an organization's data. EIM initiatives seek to build efficient and agile data management operations with capabilities for information creation, capture, distribution and consumption. ¹

RIT depends on the ability to effectively and efficiently access data and interpret it to support the management of the university and institutional effectiveness. The goal of the RIT Enterprise Information Management initiative is to provide and preserve information as a university asset that remains secure, easily accessible, meaningful, accurate and timely.  Under the leadership of the EIM Council,  components of an enterprise information management framework such as data governance and data stewardship will be formalized.

Enterprise Information Management (EIM) will support institutional effectiveness by expanding the availability, consistency, and use of institutional data. This effort will facilitate the exchange of data across information systems and the analysis of information to guide planning, decision making, and resource allocation. Organizations that effectively manage and exchange data across business units can boost the value of their enterprise information, tapping into it to increase customer satisfaction, operational productivity, reduce overhead costs, and gain a substantial competitive advantage. ²

EIM is particularly important given the current financial climate, as organizations struggle to remain profitable in the face of shrinking revenues. Some of the key business drivers behind EIM projects include customer service, marketing opportunities, process improvement, and regulatory compliance.³

The following are guiding tenets of the EIM framework:

• Data are a shared, university-wide resource
• Data consumers and providers are stewards of the University’s information
• Information security is a value and is inherent in all EIM initiatives
• Business need is a driving feature behind access to data
