BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) Retires on June 1, 2014

Effective June 1, 2014, RIT will discontinue support of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).   The mobile device landscape has changed significantly over the past several years.  All major mobile phone platforms now support ActiveSync, which provides a secure method to keep email, calendars, and contacts synchronized with mobile devices.  This includes iPhones, Android phones, Windows phones, and the newest BlackBerry devices (Z10 or Q10). 

If you are currently relying on RIT's BES to deliver email to your handheld, you will need to take one of the following actions:

  • Upgrade to a phone/device that uses ActiveSync to synchronize calendar and email, such as an iPhone, Android-based phone, Windows phone, or the newest BlackBerry devices (Z10 or Q10).  ITS recommends this solution, whenever feasible.
  • Configure your existing BlackBerry to retrieve email using the BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).  Note that this will only allow synchronization of email.  Calendars and contacts are not synchronized when using BIS.  Device specific setup instructions are available here: http://us.blackberry.com/support/apps-and-software/email-setup-and-integration.html.
