Setting Up Outlook 2007 for Exchange as an IMAP Account

Before You Start

  • You must have an RIT Computer account before you can use Exchange.
  • The only feature available with an IMAP account is the inbox.

Setting Up the Exchange IMAP Account

  1. Open Outlook 2007

     
  2. Click "Tools" and then "Account Settings..."
  3. On the "Email" tab, click "New"

     
  4. Select "Microsoft Exchange, POP3, IMAP, or HTTP" radio button and click Next
  5. Click on the checkbox for "Manually configure server settings or additional server types"

     
  6. Click on the radio button for "Internet E-mail" and click Next
  7. Fill in the following boxes:
    • Your Name = Your Full Name
    • E-mail Address = <Your RIT Computer Account username>@rit.edu
    • Account Type = select IMAP in the pull-down menu
    • Incoming mail = mymail.rit.edu
    • Outgoing mail = smtp-server.rit.edu
    • User Name = Your RIT Computer Account Userid
    • Password = Your RIT Computer Account password
    • Check the checkbox for "Remember password"
  8. Click the "More Settings" button
    • In the "Mail Account" field, change the description to "Exchange-RIT".
    • On the "General tab", enter RIT as the Organization
    • On the "Outgoing server" tab, select the checkbox for "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication" and then select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server"

    • On the "Advanced tab", select "SSL" from the 2 pull-down menus for "Use the following type of encrypted connection"
    • Also, move the "Server Timeouts" slider to the far right so it reads "10 minutes"

    • Click OK, Next and then Finish
    • Click Close to complete the setup.
  9. When you click on the "Inbox" under the heading "Exchange-RIT", you may receive a warning message regarding certificates, click "Yes".
  10. By default, email messages are stored locally in the "Sent Items" folder with an IMAP account in Outlook. If you want them stored on the server, you will have to manually move them to the "Sent Items" folder on the server. When you switch to an Exchange account, your items will be stored on the server by default and make sure that the Exchange server is set to be the default.
    • Click "Tools" and then "Account Settings..."
    • Select "Microsoft Exchange" and click "Set as Default"
