Dr. Benjamin Varela holds a B.S. degree in electro-mechanical engineering with a minor in plant operation and maintenance from the Instituto Tecnológico de Ciudad Juárez, México, a M.S. in mechanical engineering with a minor in manufacturing engineering from New Mexico State University, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the same institution. His area of concentration is in solid mechanics, non-traditional materials, geopolymers, manufacturing and remanufacturing. Currently he is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Rochester Institute of Technology where he teaches courses in Materials Science, Design of Machine Systems, Dynamics, Statics. Mechanics, and Engineering Properties of Materials.

Prior to joining RIT, Dr. Varela was a professor at the Autonomous University of Juarez and the Monterrey Institute of Technology, both in México and the University of Talca, in the Republic of Chile. In these institutions Dr. Varela taught a variety of graduate and undergraduate technical courses for the departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering.

Dr. Varela’s industrial experience comes from companies such as Optek Technologies and Diesel Recon where he worked as manufacturing and product engineer. While a doctoral student at NMSU, Dr. Varela served as project manager at the Advanced Manufacturing Center in which he had the opportunity to work in a variety of projects and to guide senior students with their final project.
