The
sectional die principle
as set forth in patent papers capitalizes on those letterforms that
have stems or curves in common and allows interchange of die sections.
William Page, who applied for the patent in 1889 claimed the process
reduced the labor and cost by one third.

top illustrates the letter delineated on the block by the first
die depression; the middle shows excess wood being removed with
a conventional router; in the third the die is being applied once
more to the block to increase the thickness of the wood making it
more durable.
