    Construction continues on the Student Hall for Exploration and Development (the SHED), which is on track to open in fall 2023. The SHED is intended to facilitate collaboration among students using the makerspaces, working on project teams, and participating in performing arts groups.

    Thomas Warfield, director of dance in NTID’s Department for Performing Arts, receives the New York State Commendation Award from State Sen. Samra Brouk at RIT’s University Gallery on June 21. The award is presented to those who devote their personal time, energy, and creativity to bettering their community and inspiring others to do the same.

    RIoT Racing, RIT’s Baja race team, zoomed to a big win at the 2022 Baja SAE Rochester Challenge this past weekend, taking the overall top placement among 100 international teams. It was the first time the team won “at home” in the seven times it has hosted the event. A full story, photo gallery and video will be in Wednesday’s News and Events.

    RIT’s Baja race team was among collegiate teams from universities in the United States, Canada, India, Brazil, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. Opening Friday at RIT’s Gordon Field House, teams spent two days on the campus, then headed to Palmyra Motocross Raceway Saturday and Sunday for exciting course events. Over four days, race teams competed in an off-road challenge with rough terrains to navigate, some mud thrown in for good measure, hills to climb, and obstacles to overcome—and they did.

    "Clarissa Uprooted: The Exhibit" is on view at RIT City Art Space through July 24. The interactive exhibit showcases the once-thriving Clarissa Street neighborhood, including a partial stage of the jazz spot, the Pythodd Club.

    RIT honored its retirees with a celebration on May 25 at the Gordon Field House. More than 300 retirees attended the event.

    Rochester Institute of Technology's three-year pause from attending Design Week in New York City was marked by two high-level events. The industrial design program's Metaproject 11 partnership with Staach, R. Roger Remington's "Onward" book, published by RIT Press, and a celebration of 12 years of the Vignelli Center for Design Studies were each celebrated at Partner + Napier's New York City location on Saturday night, May 14. In addition, industrial design students who collaborated with Modkat on Metaproject 12 exhibited their projects in a WantedDesign showcase at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) May 15-17.

    New graduates gathered for the Black Awareness Coordinating Committee's third annual Black Graduation ceremony at the University Gallery on Saturday, April 30. The student-led event was created to celebrate and uplift Black students receiving their diplomas this spring.

    A red maple tree was planted outside Global Village to honor the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day on April 29.
