MIT Chemist Timothy Swager gives RIT John Wiley Jones Distinguished Lecture, April 21
The event is free and open to the public
Massachusetts Institute of Technology chemist Timothy Swager will visit Rochester Institute of Technology to give the College of Science’s annual John Wiley Jones Distinguished Lecture.
Swager will present “Ultra-Sensitive Chemical Sensors” at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21, in the VanPeursem Auditorium in the Gosnell Building. The talk is free and open to the public.
Swager is the John D. MacArthur professor of chemistry and the head of the department of chemistry at MIT. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and has given over 200 invited lectures. His research interests are in design, synthesis, and study of organic-based electronic, sensory and liquid crystalline materials.
In the field of liquid crystals, Swager has developed new designs based upon shape to generate specific interactions between molecules and has recently developed fundamental mechanisms for increasing the order in liquid crystals by a new mechanism referred to as minimization of free volume.
The late John Wiley Jones was founder and chairman of the board of Jones Chemical Inc. in Caledonia and an avid proponent of science education. The annual lecture series was established in 1974.
