NTID/RIT Partnership with IRS and NYS To Benefit Deaf Entrepreneurs

The Business Careers Department at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), in partnership with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Division of Taxpayer Education and Communication, and the New York State (NYS) Department of Taxation and Finance Taxpayer Outreach Service, announces Starting Your Small Business Successfully!, a series of five workshops designed specifically for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals who currently own a small business or are thinking about starting one.

The workshops will focus on important planning and operational procedures necessary to start and maintain a small business. Presentations by experts in the field and group discussions among workshop participants will cover topics such as: costs associated with a small business, rules and regulations, financial planning, business tax issues, hiring employees, and resources and assistance available to business owners.

The free workshops will be held in NTID’s Lyndon Baines Johnson building on Rochester Institute of Technology’s (RIT) Henrietta campus. Interpreting services will be provided. Workshop leaders include Karen Villa, senior tax specialist for the IRS; Suzanne Reusch, outreach/problem resolution officer for the Taxpayer Service and Revenue Division of the NYS Taxation and Finance Department; NTID Business Careers faculty; and current and former business owners who are deaf or hard of hearing.

This workshop will focus on preparing and implementing a business plan, and understanding business rules and regulations related to both establishing a business and to addressing tax issues.

Understanding Business Expenses and Record Keeping
This workshop will focus on what is needed to properly record and maintain company financial transactions and records, what does and does not qualify as a business expense, and what business records to keep and for how long. Record keeping software will be demonstrated.

Financial Planning for Starting and Running a Small Business
This workshop will focus on resources available to small business owners to use for guidance and assistance in starting and running their businesses. Other topics will include tax credits and payments, financial planning of day-to-day business expenses, and how banks can assist small business owners.

Q&A for Deaf Business Owners
The final workshop in the series features a panel discussion with current and past business owners, with a question and answer session and one-on-one consultations.

NTID, one of eight colleges of RIT, is the world's first and largest technological college for deaf students. NTID represents the first concerted effort to educate large numbers of deaf students within a college campus planned principally for hearing students. Among RIT's 15,500 full- and part-time students are nearly 1,100 deaf students from the United States and other countries.
