Mary-Frances Winters, a diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice consultant and one of RIT’s earliest Minett Professors, delivered the closing keynote address at the inaugural Together RIT: Day of Understanding, Solidarity, and Racial Reconciliation on Oct. 21. The event brought hundreds of RIT students, faculty, staff, and alumni together to engage in intentional and honest dialogue about race, ethnicity, and racism.

Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) personnel were on campus Tuesday to learn about cybersecurity, imaging science, and virtual and augmented reality. Here, Katelynn Fleming, a microsystems engineering Ph.D. student, explains her research to Karen Roth, chief engineer at the AFRL Rome Research Site.

On Thursday, Oct. 13, students from RIT’s College of Art and Design showcased their designs at Fashion Week Rochester.

Members of the RIT community gathered to discuss the various areas of artificial intelligence research and applications being conducted at the university. Clark Hochgraf, associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology, demonstrates technology being developed to incorporate AI robotics into smart warehouses.

RIT’s annual Global Consortium unites Student Government leaders from RIT campuses around the world to discuss common issues and best practices. This year’s consortium was held Sept. 29-Oct. 3 on the Henrietta campus and gathered leaders from Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Dubai, Kosovo, and Rochester. China’s Student Government leaders attended remotely. The event featured tours, visits to Rochester hot spots, and presentations on leadership development, advocacy and engagement, and how to live and work in a campus environment in a post-pandemic era.

Front and center, Lucy Zhang, with the “Noot Noot” team, fights until the end to keep everyone above water during the 26th Annual Mud Tug at Grace Watson Hall and Grace Watson Fields. More than 1,000 students participated in the tug-of-war competition, which benefits the Hillside Family of Agencies and is organized by Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and Phi Kappa Psi fraternity.

The 11th annual Rochester Fringe Festival concludes this weekend, with nearly 20 free performances and exhibits from RIT students, faculty, staff, and retirees. Here, jazz ensemble Midnight Waves performs. Shows include a cappella groups; Dangerous Signs (American Sign Language, poetry, song, and dance); steel drums; Japanese drumming; dance; kazooing; belly dancing; and a drag show. Free shuttle buses available for RIT students.

NTID partnered with the Rochester Red Wings baseball team for the third annual Deaf Culture Night at Frontier Field, held Sept. 16. The game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs included a “silent inning”; “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America” performed in American Sign Language by NTID’s traveling performance troupe Sunshine 2.0; and sign language interpreters throughout the stadium, along with other planned activities, such as post-game fireworks.

Third-year students Alex Silva Joseph, Aisha Khalid, and Zoe Zapata celebrated the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month with Fiesta en la Plaza at Global Village on Sept. 15. The event featured giveaways, dancing, food, and performances by local Latinx drag queens. Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. 

The RIT Women’s Council Glass Pumpkin Sale began on Sept. 12. Pumpkins can be purchased in person at Shop One, and specialty pumpkins are available online.

Professor Hinda Mandell, director of the journalism program, explained to students the power of free speech through clothing, buttons, patches, and other wearables during an RIT 365 class, Piece/Peace Work. The class was organized by Cha Ron Sattler-LeBlanc from the Academic Success Center.

The RIT Arnold Air Society hosted a 9/11 Remembrance Vigil on Sept. 12. Henrietta's fire trucks hoisted a large U.S. flag, and 2,977 small flags were planted in the grass to mark each life lost in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.
