It All Adds Up—RIT Holds Math Workshop for High School Teachers

Math teachers from across Monroe County will head to Rochester Institute of Technology later this month to discuss how mathematics influences today’s society and the career opportunities available to their students.

RIT’s School of Mathematical Sciences will host the second annual Summer Mathematics Institute Teachers’ Workshop from June 29 through July 2 on the RIT campus. The free program was designed by high school math teachers and their university counterparts to help address educational issues in mathematical sciences. The educators will interact and learn from each other throughout the course of the workshop. A series of presenters in various fields will also discuss how mathematics underpins their professions.

High school teachers will analyze the ways in which students use math in college and investigate new mathematical applications in such areas as counterterrorism and medical research. Likewise, professors and mathematical professionals will hear about the challenges facing high school teachers who provide the foundation their students need for higher-level math classes in college.

“It’s hard to say what’s more impressive about the teachers, their dedication to their students’ success or their passion for practical applications of mathematics,” says David Ross, professor in RIT’s School of Mathematical Science. “Their intense focus on both of these things has made it an inspiring pleasure to work with them to develop and organize this workshop.”
