RIT Formula Racing was recognized for its sleek, lightweight design of its 2013 car at the recent Formula Student Germany competition.

Just off a successful 2013 season, RIT Formula Racing is hosting a New Member Day at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. The team will provide an overview and presentation in the Xerox Auditorium, then a tour in the machine shop, room 2360, where the Formula car is built. Both the auditorium and shop are located in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

Members of the team will be welcoming those interested in joining RIT Racing for the upcoming season and discussing open positions on the design, engineering and fabrication systems’ groups.

“We have a lot of development we can do on the car, especially with the turbo system,” says Travis Newberry, a fourth-year mechanical engineering major from Rochester and the Formula team’s project manager. Several team members have since graduated and the majority of the team will be its second- and third-year student-members. “We’re basically starting over, but that’s a good thing because they will be on the team for a longer time and can learn the processes before starting something new.”

Note: Video of the 2012 car assembly (time-lapse) is available.
