ABOUT NEWLAB
Newlab advances technologies that support the health of our planet.

We act as a facilitator, connector, and translator for our community of experts and innovators, helping to build, test, and scale world-changing ideas through investment, venture building, and structured collaboration with industry and government partners.

Recently named Fast Company’s Design Company of the Year, Newlab opened in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 2016, transforming what was once a naval machine shop into an 84,000 square foot center for applied innovation. Today, Newlab is home to over 200 companies, more than 900 entrepreneurs, and domain experts – all working together to apply transformative technologies to the world’s most pressing challenges. To date, Newlab has helped its member companies raise over $450M in capital, with over $400M of successful exits, and a collective valuation of over $2.8B. This fall, Newlab will open its second flagship location as part of Ford’s $1B mobility innovation district in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit.

ROLE SUMMARY
Newlab seeks a Research Analyst with a technical proficiency and background to work with the Product and Programs team to support research efforts for an Innovation Studio focused on advancing translation and language services and accessible communication products for deaf and hard-of-hearing communities. Responsibilities include leading industry and technical landscape research, participating in generative research interviews, market analysis and startup diligence. This role will work closely with members of the Product and Programs team, across Newlab departments and alongside partners to identify opportunities for emerging technologies to support innovation. The research will help to inform the recruitment of relevant startups and the design of pilot projects.

DURATION & HOURS

The Research Analyst will be engaged from the period of August 1, 2022 through October 15, 2022 for a maximum of 300 hours, expected to include up to 20 hours per week.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS

Support generative research: The Research Analyst will work alongside the team to identify key subject matter experts and stakeholders. They will help shape discussion guides to be used in interviews with these key stakeholders and experts and actively participate in these discussions to glean information, highlight outstanding questions and new learnings and help to bring this knowledge back to the team to support the overall Studio strategy

Secondary research: The Research Analyst will perform desktop research to build out the team’s collective understanding of the relevant ecosystem. This will include collecting, synthesizing and summarizing published ecosystem content from reports, studies and websites and presenting it to the Newlab Studio team. Key deliverables include:
- Build a robust ecosystem: The Research Analyst will build out a robust ecosystem database that will include information on key startups, experts, corporate activity, academic research and investment activity relevant to the translation, language and communications services industry. The Research Analyst will own and manage this dynamic ecosystem data set and work to surface insights and patterns for the team.
- Perform landscape research and diligence: The Research Analyst will have an evaluative lens of the market landscape and investment opportunities. Strategic decision making for the Studio will be based on this knowledge, such as focus areas to pursue, targeting new partners and recruiting compelling startups.
- Team collaboration and client engagement: Ongoing collaboration and synthesis with the team will help to evolve our collective understanding on the topic and build alignment on opportunities and solutions that address the stakeholder and ecosystem needs. The Research Analyst may also interface with the client partners to discuss research progress and direction and to synthesize feedback and input from Studio advisors and industry experts.
- Reporting: The Research Analyst will work alongside the design team to create narrative summaries of the research for different audiences at key Studio milestones.
