"As an artist and writer, my work is an investigation of communication and language, often filtered through my deafness and native sign language. Another important filter in my body of work is a central, longtime artistic and practical collaborator, Oliver Pouliot. As sign language interpreter, Oliver is a living, breathing, fleshed transporter of my words, thoughts, vulnerabilities, and desires - the very phenomenon that my work attempts to explore. We will present two video works which make up the Extractions series. These works cut out spoken language from the vocal statements of men who were asked to talk about emotional experiences close to their cores - leaving only involuntary facial expressions, tics, and inadvertent physical reveals which are then edited with an eye towards finding rhythm and pattern in these unconscious communications. I would like to present these works as veering towards the abstract end of the communicative spectrum - and the spectrum of masculinity, control and power. Alongside, I would like to present a joint performance with Oliver which will also explore overt and hidden communication, physicality, control, and power."--Louise Stern
