Attend the five-day Microsoft Excel 2013: Create an Electronic Worksheet workshop June 8-12, 2015 at a cost of $500 at RIT/NTID in Rochester, NY. The workshop will be held daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.


Microsoft Excel is a powerful computer application tool that helps you to reliably and securely organize, manipulate, and graph numeric data at work or for personal use. This workshop will begin with the basics and gradually work up to a point where you will become a proficient user in Excel 2013.

  • Creating and formatting spreadsheets

  • Using formulas and functions to calculate and chart data

  • Sorting and filtering data

  • Exploring lists ranges

  • Creating PivotTables


Upon completion of this week-long professional development opportunity, the successful participant will create cells and ranges, apply formula and functions, create charts and objects, create and manage worksheets and workbooks, and create tables in Excel.  When you master those skills, you will be ready to take the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) – Excel certification test (  Earning this particular certification is recognition of core skills in Excel applications.  Toward this end during the week-long workshop, you will engage in self-paced activities, with accompanying brief lectures (delivered in fluent ASL).  Those self-paced activities, in addition, will allow you to master difficult Microsoft Excel tasks, such as creating advanced formulas, creating advanced charts and tables, managing and sharing workbooks, and applying custom formats and layouts – items covered in the MOS Expert – Excel certification test. 




Each participant should be familiar with personal computers and with Microsoft Windows operating systems.  No prior knowledge or use of Microsoft Excel is required.

Instructor: Mike Kane

A member of the NTID Business Studies department instructional faculty since September 2006, Mike Kane has taught accounting-, Microsoft Office Excel- and personal finance-related courses to students pursuing associate-level degrees.  Kane is also a faculty advisor for the NTID Business Club.  Prior to RIT, Kane has worked in various executive accounting and business positions at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Western Pennsylvania, National Association of the Deaf (NAD), Communication Service for the Deaf (CSD), and South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners (SDBMOE).  Kane earned an undergraduate degree in accounting from RIT and two graduate degrees in administration (Gallaudet University) and deaf education (RIT).
