Higher Education in a Tail Spin

Over the past decade both internal and external changes have had a fundamental impact to higher education but not always for the “better”. Rising tuition costs, salaries and benefits for both faculty and staff are not keeping pace with industry, rapid changes in available technology, a shrinking talent pool in some disciplines and a shift of emphasis on research vs. teaching are just some of the variables that are creating changes to how Academic Institutions operate. These events are creating a perfect storm that is impacting how higher education serves the needs of students to prepare for a career in industry.  A loss of focus on “the student is the product vs. the student is the customer” is causing a disconnect between the educational experience and the needs of industry.

This paper will investigate these issues and current trends to better understand the ramifications from what could occur to higher education in the coming years.
