gold separator bar

Establishing a plan to increase educational opportunities for deaf individuals in Cambodia is a primary objective of NTID's Pre-College Educational Network (P-CEN) project. To that end, a comprehensive meeting and observation schedule was offered to a delegation from the two primary programs serving deaf individuals in Cambodia; the Deaf Development Program and Krousar Thmey, both of Phnom Penh.

The purpose of the visit to NTID was to observe educational practices and learn of ways in which Cambodian programs could be enhanced. Specifically the delegation;

  1. Observed classrooms using different instructional approaches (direct versus supported instruction),
  2. Learned about sign language interpreter education,
  3. Observed interpreting in educational settings,
  4. Observed models of itinerant teaching,
  5. Observed resource teaching at both K-12 and postsecondary schools.

The delegation visited the Monroe #1 BOCES Foreman Center and the Rochester School for the Deaf in order to see, first-hand, programs specially designed for K-12 students.

Delegation
The two organizations comprised the delegation; Justin Smith, Deputy Program Director and Chamroeun KONG, Community Specialist from Deaf Development Program; and Auray Aun, General Director of Krousar Thmey.

Cambodian Presentation at NTID
The visiting delegation presented to 50 NTID Faculty and staff members regarding "The State of Deaf Education in Cambodia: Presentation & Discussion" on Friday, October 5, 2012.
