The president of the World Federation of the Deaf, Markku Jokinen, visited PEN-International on 2 September 2004 and was introduced to the PEN program by Director DeCaro. Discussions were held regarding involving the WFD in future PEN efforts to improve postsecondary education of men and women who are deaf around the world. It was agreed that WFD and PEN would find ways to cooperate closely as PEN-International moves into its fifth year of operation and submits its next five-year plan to The Nippon Foundation of Japan.
