James J. DeCaro, Director and E. William Clymer, Coordinator of PEN-International, along with Mr. Y. Ishii of The Nippon Foundation, formed a delegation that visited the deafness program at Dong Nai Provincial Teacher's College, Vietnam. Dr. James Woodward and Nyugen Thi Hoa hosted the PEN-International delegation during the visit. The agenda included three areas of possible collaboration with PEN-International; the development of Vietnamese sign language training resources, issues related to the initiation of an interpreter training program in Vietnam and the inclusion of computer skills within the deaf program.
It was decided at the conclusion of the visit that PEN-International will provide extensive training to the deaf students creating Vietnamese sign language materials in March 2006. Additional resources will be shared in support of the goals to establish an interpreter training program and an expansion of the curriculum at the school to include computer training.
