In the months of November and December 2003, the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies at CSB and PEN-International completed a series of five seminars that comprised the first module (The learner and the learning process) of a six-module series regarding learner-centered education. The first module focused upon providing faculty participants with an orientation to the learner-centered education model following a framework set by the American Psychological Association. These principles cover cognitive and meta-cognitive factors, motivational and affective factors, and factors relating to individual differences.

The topics for succeeding modules that will be offered in 2004 are:

  • Module 2-Deaf learning processes: How do deaf students learn?
  • Module 3-Developing a learner-centered curriculum for deaf students
  • Module 4-Designing a technology-supported learner-centered learning environment
  • Module 5-Assessment and remediation of student learning
  • Module 6-Conducting and managing a technology-supported learned-centered learning environment
  • Participants in the training thus far include 11 faculty members from the following Philippine institutions:

    • Bible Institute for the Deaf (tertiary)
    • CAP-School for the Deaf (tertiary)
    • CSB (tertiary)
    • Manila Christian Computer Institute for the Deaf (tertiary)
    • Southeast Asian Institute for the Deaf (secondary)
