On 9 March 2006, Denise Kavin, Senior Project Associate for PEN-International and Patricia Mudgett DeCaro, Consultant for PEN-International, facilitated a two-hour roundtable discussion for 15 deaf professionals, who work primarily with deaf and hard-of-hearing students at the College of St. Benilde in Manila, Philippines.

This roundtable discussion was guided by presenting the following discussion questions:

  1. What is a professional?
  2. How do you define ethics?
  3. What are Professional Boundaries?
  4. What is a Role Model?
  5. What are the Unique Challenges of Deaf Professionals?
  6. A Case Example and Possible Scenarios

There was much lively discussion and experience-sharing, and everybody present agreed that it was helpful and empowering to hear the thoughts and experiences of their colleagues. A list of online resources and references pertaining to the postsecondary education of deaf and hard of hearing students were also presented, which are included in the PowerPoint presentation file.
