Bookbinding 2000 drew an international audience of binders and bibliophiles to commemorate the lifework of Bernard C. Middleton, whose collection of books on bookbinding is now held at RIT’s Cary Graphic Arts Collection. These 6 videos, along with their companion publication, Bookbinding 2000 Proceedings, present the lectures and demonstrations delivered at the conference, and offer insight into the diverse and stimulating work taking place in bookbinding studies. Michael Wilcox Gold Tooling Viewers will be treated to a thorough explanation and demonstration of the egg-glaire technique for gold tooling. The use of handle letters, lines, and various tools will be explored in order to show how these may be arranged to form titles, textures, and other images suitable for designs on leather bindings. Don Etherington Fully Dressed in Leather: Conservation Style As he covers a book in full leather, Don Etherington will demonstrate the often unappreciated principles of sound forwarding and discuss various aspects of techniques designed to achieve a more durable binding. Monique Lallier Edge-to-Edge Doublure Using leather or paper, the edge-to-edge doublure is a refined and exquisite finish for the inner boards of a designer binding and, if so desired, may be made to continue on the fly leaves. A successful and smooth result depends on the careful preparation of the surface underneath the doublure, through the use of special lining and sanding techniques. Anthony Cains A Decorative Leather Covering Technique Encouraged by Edgar Mansfield, his teacher at the London School of Printing during the late 1950s, Anthony Cains adopted his technique of moulding and manipulating the leather during the covering process to produce a more or less spontaneous design statement. Probably the best known example of Cains's work using this technique is illustrated in Philip Smiths book New Directions in Bookbinding (1974) and again in Eric Burdett's The Craft of Bookbinding; A Practical Handbook (1975). This covering method will be thoroughly demonstrated here. James Brockman The Concave Spine: Rigid Flexibility This demonstration will explore the historical evidence that book spines naturally adopt a concave shape. There will be a detailed demonstration and explanation of the structure and an examination of the function of the concave spine. Louise Genest The Exposed Spine Binding There are many kinds of exposed spine structures and/or exposed sewing techniques. Many such alternative structure bindings have been popularized for artists’ books. This demonstration will focus on techniques for producing an exposed spine binding in full leather for a multiple-section text block. The process will be shown from beginning to end.
