Coming of Age describes the formation of RIT’s Center for Imaging Science (CIS) from its inception in the early 1980s to its current reputation as a nationally recognized research facility. Overview

CIS awarded RIT’s first Ph.D. in 1993. The program helped transform RIT from a teaching university to a research institute. Dr. John Schott narrates the history of the Center for Imaging Science, accompanied by archival photographs, and highlights significant milestones in CIS history.

About the Author
Dr. John Schott was a principal physicist conducting remote sensing research at Calspan Corporation (formerly Cornell Aeronautical Laboratories) for eight years. In 1980, he joined the Photographic Science and Instrumentation Department at RIT, where he helped guide the formation of RIT’s Center for Imaging Science and the development of RIT’s first doctoral program. Now retired, Dr. Schott continues to conduct research and mentor graduate students. He received a Scholarship Award in 2009, was inducted into RIT’s Innovation Hall of Fame in 2013, and was named RIT faculty retiree of the year in 2017.
