Explore the Genesee Valley with Phyllis Kitt through her photographs and brief histories of churches in this picturesque area of New York State. This collection of architectural structures is as diverse as the denominations in the region. Overview

Explore the Genesee Valley with Phyllis Kitt through her photographs and brief histories of churches in this picturesque area of New York State. This collection of architectural structures is as diverse as the denominations in the region. Some selections include: the spectacular Neo-Gothic St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Rochester, the Cobblestone Church in Childs (the oldest cobblestone church in North America), the Greek Revival Brooks Grove Methodist Church at the Genesee Country Village and Museum, and the Romanesque-influenced First Universalist Church in Rochester. The locations of 104 churches and chapels range from rural villages untouched by time, to larger bustling cities. Embark on a pleasant journey of discovery through Kitt’s history-laden text accompanied by full color images.

PHYLLIS KITT studied photography at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. When she is not taking pictures, she is advocating for libraries and tutoring in literacy. But she is usually taking pictures.

Consulting Architect, FRANK GROSSO, has a distinguished career that includes, in Rochester, such projects as the Bausch & Lomb World Headquarters and extensive renovation work at the Memorial Art Gallery. He has a Master of Architecture degree from Yale University.

Reviews

"Phyllis Kitt’s God’s Country is a landscape of church halls, chapels, bell towers, and steeples. Her photographs and informed, stylish text enlighten and delight us as she guides us through her God’s world. No architectural detail escapes her notice. We in the twenty-first century are in debt to her, as we are to the devout congregations, ministers, building committees, and architects, whether known or unknown, who bequeathed us such a wide-ranging panoply of architectural treasures.” —Stuart Bolger, Director Emeritus Genesee Country Village and Museum
