Overview

Continuing the annual night-time "painting with light" photography project, Schoen Place, Pittsford New York was chosen to be RIT's Big Shot No. 24. Schoen Place is located on the Erie Canal in Pittsford New York. Referred to by some as the Eighth Wonder of the World, the canal was completed in 1825 and links the waters of Lake Erie in the west to the Hudson River. When constructed it included 18 aqueducts to carry the canal over ravines and rivers, and 83 locks, with a rise of 568 feet from the Hudson River to Lake Erie. It was 4 feet deep and 40 feet wide, and floated boats carrying up to 30 tons of freight. A ten-foot wide towpath was later built along the bank of the canal for horses, mules, and oxen led by boat. Today Schoen Place is the home to several restaurants, retail stores, and shopping areas. It is a highlight stopping point for canal and river day trips, which is captured in the Big Shot. The Big Shot Story At the end of the 1986-87 school year, Professors William DuBois and Michael Peres were analyzing the ups and downs of the recently completed academic year. In discussing new ways to teach electronic flash photography and problem-solving to the second-year Biomedical Photography students, it was decided that an extracurricular "painting with light" project should be tried. The idea was inspired by a similar project that was produced by the Sylvania Corporation in the 1950s called the "Big Shot." 8 cards with envelopes Cards printed in full color on front, black inside
