Design and Science

Limited Supply!

Will Burtin pioneered important contributions to international typography and visual design. He is best known as the world leader in using design to interpret science; as a proponent of 'clean,' uncluttered sans-serif typography; and for his large-scale three-dimensional models, which carried the craft and the art of display to new heights. His walk-through models included a human blood cell (1958) and brain functions (1960).

His major achievement: his clarity and ingenuity with models and graphics made complex information easy to assimilate.

Spend Your Alphabets Lavishly!

"Spend Your Alphabets Lavishly,"—a quote from Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables—aptly describes the lifework of two principal figures in contemporary graphic arts: Hermann and Gudrun Zapf. The Zapfs' 50-year relationship with Rochester Institute of Technology is feted in this exhibition and catalogue, sponsored by RIT’s Melbert B. Cary, Jr. Graphic Arts Collection. The show presents rare holdings of Zapf materials held at the Cary Collection—the foremost Zapf archive outside of Germany.

Design is One

Vignelli is a powerful name in graphic design. IMAGES' Hands On series is greatly enhanced by this wonderful book by Lella and Massimo Vignelli. Massimo learnt early in his career that a designer should be able to design everything, hence, 'design is one'. Lella and Massimo Vignelli prove that design should be semantically correct, syntactically correct, and pragmatically understandable, but also visually powerful, intellectually elegant and timeless. The book shows that real meaning must be researched and consistent throughout a design, and that the final result must be understandable.

The Book of Jonah

From the colophon: "In this special edition of the Book of Jonah, content and form are intimately interwoven. The linear drawings, suggestive rather than realistic, are contemporary in style yet drawn in the spirit of a past in which naturalistic representations were avoided. The atmosphere of the past is further evoked by the use of Oriental style elements in the Hebrew writing. While the letterforms are contemporary in their simplicity they are informed by manuscript writing of the pre-medieval era.
