HiBeams is a startup created by two RIT students, Leondro McHenry and James Kemper. Leondro and James met early in their college careers and quickly became friends. A few years later, they were in business together.
James was born in Yokosuka, Japan and is currently a third year studying advertising and public relations at RIT. His main hobby is longboarding everywhere he goes and it’s a rare occurrence to see him without his board. He also plays rugby and football in his free time.
Leondro was born in Seattle, WA and is a fourth year currently studying electrical/mechanical engineering technology at RIT. He has a love for technology, design, biomimicry, cars, art, music and much more. Leondro is an avid student of Kali/Filipino Martial Arts, an ultimate frisbee player and a longboarder. He is passionate about finding unique applications of different technologies, just like HiBeams!
HiBeams is dedicated to creating technology that enhances the lives and adventures of their customers. They are currently developing their first product, an intelligent safety lighting system for longboards and skateboards. HiBeams started out competing in the Fall 2016 Tiger Tank Competition. After winning second place, they continued into the Applied Entrepreneurship class and the Student Incubator Program through the Simone Center. Working alongside their Lead Innovation Coach, Dana Wolcott, they continue to learn, grow, and develop their prototypes.
They are currently preparing for a campus crowdfunding campaign with RIT USEED. They hope to increase awareness, create connections and attain the resources necessary to take their business to next level. HiBeams is excited to announce that they will be debuting their prototype at Imagine RIT on May 6!
