Assistant professor to extend map of the universe

Sukanya Chakrabarti, assistant professor in RIT’s School of Physics and Astronomy, has been awarded a Scialog: Time Domain Astrophysics collaborative award from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement. Chakrabarti will use the funding to build an expanded dynamical map of the Milky Way using asteroseismic distances, expanding the map of our galaxy beyond Gaia’s current all-sky view. The work will measure, for the first time, accurate distances for the outer galaxy and the halo of the Milky Way. The grant will also help fund astrophysical sciences and technology Ph.D. student Peter Craig as well as a postdoctoral associate to participate in the study.
