Staff Council Plans for 2018-19

RIT Staff Council has been busy this Fall semester! Before we enjoy the Thanksgiving break and start thinking about the holiday season, I’d like to take some time to highlight what we’ve been up to and discuss our plans for the rest of the year.

At our meetings, we’ve welcomed several guests. RIT President Dr. David Munson and Dr. Kit Mayberry, VP for Strategic Planning and Special Initiatives, joined us to discuss the revised Strategic Plan, "Greatness Through Difference." The plan was just approved by the Board of Trustees. Dr. Munson also introduced us to a new revision of policy C23.0, Policy on Consensual Romantic or Sexual Relationships. This revised policy is in place on an interim basis, and RIT’s governance groups are reviewing the policy and have the opportunity to propose revisions before making an endorsement. Erika Duthiers, Assistant Vice President for Compliance & Ethics and Deputy General Counsel in the Office of Legal Affairs, presented a new policy to Staff Council. C25.0, Policy on Mandatory Training, sets out mandatory training requirements for employees. This policy has been approved by all governance groups and is in place as of October 31.

Staff Council has also welcomed John Moore, Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management Services, to discuss constructions projects, shipping and receiving news, and other updates from FMS. We’ve had discussions with Kate Mason, Director of Parking & Transportation, and John Connelly, Parking Enforcement & Operations Manager.

The Presidential Awards for Outstanding Staff were held on October 3. Every year, we are amazed at the stories we learn about our wonderful staff at RIT. This year was no exception! We thank President Munson for sponsoring this event and celebrating with us. We also welcomed President Al Simone to the ceremony as we announced a new award named in his honor. Take a minute to meet the recipients and view all of the remarkable nominees

We have six subcommittees this year. Each Staff Council representative serves on a subcommittee, and over the summer we developed our plans of work for the year. You can read our full plans of work here. Following are some highlights:

  • Executive Committee (EC) is the liaison between Staff Council and the RIT administration. This year, we’re continuing our customer service initiative with monthly “lunch & learn” events with RIT service providers called “It Starts with Us” and encouraging open and transparent communication with RIT departments. We will continue working with Dr. Munson to execute the strategic plan.
  • The Communications Committee continues to work to increase the visibility of Staff Council to the entire University through email communication with constituents, a strong social media presence, regularly updated website content, and promotional items to inform the RIT community about events and SC initiatives.
  • The Elections Committee will be redistributing our voting blocks to reflect changes in RIT departments and organization. They also plan to work on improving staff accessibility to the nomination and voting processes, and increasing the diversity of Staff Council candidates.
  • The Events Committee keeps busy all year long, planning and executing events for Staff Council. They’ve already completed the Presidential Awards for Outstanding Staff and staffing a table at the RIT Benefits Fair. The RIT FoodShare Drive is wrapping up now, so get your donations in by November 16th! In the Spring, this committee will plan the Staff Appreciation Day and Community Picnic and the annual Staff Council Retreat for representatives.
  • University Issues and Policies (UIP) reviews issues brought forth by constituents, as well as university policies that are up for review. The Staff Grievance Policy was officially put in place on September 28. The UIP committee will continue working with Legal Affairs and HR to develop a procedures document that will accompany the policy.
  • We added a new ad hoc committee this year, the Budget and Resource Allocation Committee. This group is learning about the budget process at RIT and evaluating the value of adding this committee as an official subcommittee of Staff Council.

What’s next for Staff Council? We’ll be welcoming Judy Bender, Assistant Vice President of  Human Resources, to our meeting this Thursday, November 15. Feel free to attend the meeting or share your questions or concerns with your Representative. In December, Provost Dr. Ellen Granberg will join us for her first Staff Council meeting. Ian Mortimer, Vice President of Enrollment Management, will be with us in January for an update on enrollment. Keep an eye out for Staff Council emails with full meeting agendas and details.

As always, thank you for all that you do at RIT! Staff Council is here for you, so please do not hesitate to reach out to your Staff Council representative, to me, or to the Staff Council office with your feedback and questions!

Staff Council meetings are held every other Thursday from 2-4pm in the SAU 1829 Room. All members of the RIT community are welcome! Our meeting schedule and agendas can be found here.
