Health Insurance

All full and part-time international undergraduate and graduate students (except those on H1B visas) registered at RIT will be automatically enrolled in the RIT Aetna Student Health Plan unless other wise exempted by RIT.*

What this means to you:

  • You will be automatically enrolled in RIT's Aetna Student Health Plan upon your active registration. Your coverage will be activated by your registration status on a semi-annual basis and you will be billed on your student account accordingly.
  • The insurance plan coverage will include benefits for medical evacuation and repatriation.
  • Eligible international students who enter RIT under sponsored programs that include qualified medical insurance will be exempted from maintaining RIT's insurance. RIT's Undergraduate Admissions & Graduate Enrollment Services Offices will flag those exempted students and they will not automatically be enrolled in the plan.

Description of the RIT Aetna Student Health Plan plan benefits

There are very limited circumstances under which a waiver of the RIT health insurance will be granted. For detailed information about the requirements to waive click here.

Information on property insurance and dental insurance for students is available on RIT's Global Risk Management Services website.

Insurance While on OPT

Please note that once you stop enrolling at RIT, you are no longer automatically enrolled in the Student Accident and Sickness Insurance Program. Unless you have an employer who will enroll you in their plan, we recommend that you purchase coverage.

While ISS does not endorse any particular health insurance plan, we are aware of the following providers that have F-1 OPT health insurance options. These companies are members of our professional organization, NAFSA: Association of International Educators.
