College and Department Changes
New names for two colleges
Beginning in July, two RIT colleges will be renamed. The College of Imaging Arts and Sciences (CIAS) will be renamed the College of Art and Design while the College of Applied Science and Technology (CAST) will be renamed the College of Engineering Technology. The colleges were renamed to more accurately reflect the collection of programs that they contain and to provide a sharper focus to their future.
Changing the name of a college is a complicated process and will take months to complete. Incoming and continuing students must be informed appropriately, marketing materials will be changed, and our back-office systems will need to be updated. Much of this work will occur over the summer months. Students who graduate in December 2018 will see the new names on their diplomas.
Additionally, the School of International Hospitality and Service Innovation will move from CAST to Saunders College of Business. With student success first and foremost in our mind, RIT feels this move will offer students new opportunities for academic success on campus, as well as opportunities to succeed in their careers.
The process for the transition will be a collaborative effort involving the faculty and staff from the School of Hospitality and Service Innovation, the Saunders College of Business, and with advice and guidance from CAST leadership. With this change, collaborations with CAST faculty, and growing partnerships with RIT’s technology-focused programs in other colleges will continue.
The conversion will be completed by July 2019 and will follow RIT policies with regard to transfer of programs and faculty and will ensure that students are not adversely impacted.
