In just seven seasons at RIT, Liz Masterson has built the RIT women’s soccer team into one of the top programs in the Northeast region. This past fall, she led the Tigers to a 12-4-3 overall record and their sixth trip in seven years to the Liberty League Tournament. The 2017 squad broke the school record for fewest goals allowed in a season with just ten goals against, and hosted the Liberty League quarterfinals after finishing third in the conference. Masterson led the Tigers to their first two NCAA Tournament berths in 2012 and 2013, including an appearance in the second round for the first time in 2013.

Masterson, the 2012 Liberty League Coach of the Year, has led RIT to a 78-47-21 (.606) overall mark, and seven postseason berths, in eight seasons. RIT advanced to its first Liberty League Championship game in 2013, before falling to the eventual NCAA National Champion, William Smith. RIT went 12-5-4 in 2013, setting the school record with 12 shut outs, while allowing just 14 goals.

Under Masterson’s tutelage, 33 players have earned All-Conference honors, including seven from the 2017 squad: Riley Yankowich, Courtney Hunt, Jessica Jones, Kelly Rogers, Emily Thiel, Elena Wolfe, and Lauren Chester.  Yankowich was also honored as the Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year, while Yankowich, Jones, and Rogers all earned All-East Region nods.

Each of the last eight seasons, RIT has been awarded with the Team Academic Award by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), for maintaining a team grade point average of 3.0 or better.  May was a 2015 CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-American selection. Amanda Murray was a third team selection in 2014, and Jamie Martinez was a second team Academic All-American selection in 2013, while also earning NSCAA second team All-American honors.

Masterson also serves as advisor to the RIT Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which has hosted numerous events on campus and off that helps promote RIT Athletics as well as allow the student-athletes to give back to the Rochester community.

Masterson came to RIT after serving two seasons as the head women’s soccer coach at Elmira College.

While at Elmira, she helped Elmira earn the NSCAA All-Academic Team awards in 2008 and 2009. Four Soaring Eagles earned All-Empire 8 honors in Masterson’s two seasons.

Masterson is a 2005 graduate of St. Lawrence University, where she received a bachelor’s degree in government. She was a four-year starter of the varsity soccer team, serving as captain in 2004. Masterson earned NSCAA first team All-American honors in 2003. She was a three-time All-Region performer (2001, 2003 and 2004); and a four-time first team All-Liberty League performer from 2001-04. She scored 20 goals and added 15 assists for 55 points at St. Lawrence.

After graduation, Masterson went on to Manhattanville College where she earned a master’s degree in sport business management in 2008. While there, she served as the assistant coach for the women’s soccer team for two seasons.

In June 2011, Masterson graduated the NCAA Women Coaches Academy. She has her advanced diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), and has her U.S. Soccer Federation “B” License.
