    RIT Softball 2019 Coaches Clinic

    for any coaches of girls fast pitch 10-18 years old

    Wednesday, February 27th 6PM - 8PM

    at RIT Clark Gym


    Learn new ideas and teaching methods in all aspects of the game in order to impact youth softball!

    • The clinic will be run by RIT Head Coach Rebecca Stryker, RIT Assistant Coaches Nicole Watson and Pitching Coach Mary Karen Wheat, as well as players from the RIT Softball team.  
    • The clinic will offer coaches the unique opportunity to learn fundamentals of position specific skills from experienced college instructors.  Skills will include: batting, fielding, throwing, and base running.
    • Participants leave the clinic with an insight into coaching teenage female athletes, new drills for your team, and a focused and inspired outlook for your season.
    • There will be ample opportunity throughout and after the clinic to address your questions.

    becky_strykerRebecca Stryker - Head Coach

    Former RIT standout first baseman Rebecca Stryker (previously May) begins her tenth season as head coach of the Tigers softball program in 2018-19 Stryker, the 2016 Liberty League Coach of the Year, has guided the Tigers to 132 victories and will look lead the Tigers towards their third  Liberty League postseason berth in the last four seasons.

    In 2017, the Tigers won 22 games and advanced to the Liberty League Tournament for the second straight year. RIT won its first postseason game as a Liberty League member and finished second in the regular season standings. Freshman Erin Guinan was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region First Team honors.
     
    In 2016, while Stryker and her staff were named the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. RIT advanced to the Liberty League Tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 2012. Eight players earned All-Liberty League accolades, including Sierra Valentine, who was named Pitcher of the Year, and Danielle Hotz, the Rookie of the Year.

    In addition, Stryker and her squad are great representatives of the university in the community, holding several fundraising initiatives for various causes. In 2015, Sarah Wolcott was RIT’s Mark Ellingson Award Winner for Academic Excellence. Seven different players have earned CoSIDA Academic All-Region honors, including Amanda Cook, an Academic All-America selection in 2016.
     
    Since moving to the Liberty League in 2012, Stryker has had 16 different players earn all-league accolades. In addition, seven players garnered All-Empire 8 accolades in Stryker’s first two seasons at RIT. 

     

    Nicole Watson

    Assistant Coach


    Mary Karen Wheat begins her fourth season as an assistant coach with the RIT softball program in 2018-19 and will work primarily with the pitching staff. In 2016, Wheat was honored as part of the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.
     
    A former pitcher at Brockport High School (1995-1998) and Binghamton University (1998-2003), Wheat has worked with some of the best coaches in New York State.
     
    Wheat served as the head coach at Brockport High School in 2015 and 2016, leading the Blue Devils to the 2015 Section V Championship game. Wheat was also the head coach at Red Jacket Central School, where she led the team to the 2010 Section V Championship, and two Section V Semifinal appearances (2009 and 2011).
     
    Wheat is the owner of Black and White Baseball and Softball, a training academy that specializes in pitching and catching. In addition, the company offers strength and agility training along with mental training with clinical psychologists

    Mary Karen Wheat begins her third season as an assistant coach with the RIT softball program in 2017-18 and will work primarily with the pitching staff. In 2016, Wheat was honored as part of the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.

She also owns Power Fastpitch, a travel softball organization for teams aged 12U to 18U.

    Nicole Watson - Asst. Coach

    Nicole Watson is entering her fourth season on the RIT softball staff as an assistant coach for the 2018-19 season. In 2016, Watson was honored as part of the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year.
     
    Watson played five years of varsity softball at Newark Valley High School, serving as a three-year captain. From there, she moved on to play collegiate at the University of Rochester, where she caught for four seasons. In 2014, Rochester advanced to the NCAA Division III College World Series.
     
    Watson earned her bachelor’s degree in business from Rochester in 2014. She has served as a head coach for a handful of youth travel softball teams and was an assistant at her alma mater, Newark Valley in 2012 and 2013.
     
    Watson resides in Rochester and is a Certified General Appraiser at Bruckner, Tillett, Rossi, Cahill and Associates.
