The Tiger Lacrosse Camp and staff are back for the 10th year,
the week of July 13-16. This camp is for boys ages 7-18 years old.
With a wonderful week of camp in 2019, the Tiger camp staff is excited for another great camp in 2020. Our staff is determined to make you the best Lacrosse player and person you can be. Our staff is experienced in all the different aspects of the game of lacrosse to ensure quality coaching for all players. We will focus on developing individual fundamentals of the game for the beginner and the advanced player by drilling, repetition, attention to detail, and encouraging sportsmanship and fair play. Providing instruction and feedback for every camper to build their personal game is a goal of ours. Implementing and encouraging those individual concepts into team strategies for all elements of the game will also be emphasized.
Our group of coaches will consist of RIT players and alums as well as some of the best high school coaches, college coaches, and players from around the country. We will also have a few guests from the professional ranks. We believe our staff has the knowledge and experience to make you the best you can be but the commitment to excellence begins with you.
Camp Staff:
Jake Coon
RIT men’s lacrosse head coach Jake Coon has accomplished more in 10 seasons then what some coaches accomplish in an entire career. In those 10 seasons at RIT, Coon has led the Tigers to an astounding 188-23 record, 10 straight conference titles, 10 straight trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament, and the Tigers only two appearances in the National Championship game (2013 and 2017).
On March 9, 2016 Coon became the winningest coach in program history, earning his 128th victory at Rensselaer. He needed just 143 games to reach the hallowed milestone.
Coon, a 2018 inductee into the Upstate New York Chapter of the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame, came to RIT after spending five years at UMass-Amherst as an assistant coach, serving as the second assistant from 2005-06, and the first assistant from 2006 through 2009. In 2006, he helped coach the Minutemen to the Division I National Championship game.
A 2001 graduate of Nazareth College, Coon excelled on the field, helping the Golden Flyers to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances including berths in the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Division III Championship Games, winning the title in 1997. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in social science and a minor in sports management. He was a four-time All-American, two-year captain, and a two-time NCAA Division III Goalie of the Year.
He returned to Nazareth to coach for five years (2001-2005), helping lead the Golden Flyers to four NCAA Tournament berths. He worked directly with the goalies and defense, guiding Nazareth to a national championship game appearance in 2004.
Coon was inducted into the Nazareth College Hall of Fame in 2009.
After graduation, he played professionally for the Rochester Knighthawks of the National Lacrosse League from 2000-2003. Coon played for the Rochester Rattlers of the Major League Lacrosse from 2001-2005 and the Boston Cannons from 2005-2009.
Shawn Wilkins
Shawn Wilkins, a member of the 2019 RIT Sports Hall of Fame class, begins his 11th season as an assistant coach for the RIT men's lacrosse program in 2019-20, serving as RIT’s offensive coordinator. Wilkins is also highly involved with recruiting and the day-to-day operations of one of the most successful programs in the nation. He is an integral part of a program that has made 10 straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, including berths in the 2013 and 2017 championship games. In 2013 he was honored by the USILA as the Assistant Coach of the Year. In his first 10 seasons, Wilkins has helped RIT to an impressive 188-23 record and 10 straight conference titles.
Under Wilkins' tutelage, the Tigers offense has become one of the most prolific scoring teams in all of Division III. Last season, the Tigers tallied 365 goals, finishing in the top-15 nationally averaging 16.59 goals per game. The man-up unit was eighth in Division III, converting 47.6 percent of its chances in 2019. In his 10 seasons, Wilkins has led a potent attack that scored 3,371 goals, averaging 15.97 goals per game over that span. RIT has had seven straight 300-goal seasons under Wilkins.
