At RIT you’ll live and study with over 2,635 international students from 102 countries. In addition, more than 2,000 students of color have elected to study at RIT, embodying our commitment to diversity. Adding a social and educational dynamic not found at any other university are more than 1,200 deaf and hard-of-hearing students supported by RIT’s National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

Diversity and Inclusion



Since the Fall of 2011, the Determined Individuals Victoriously Achieving Success (D.I.V.A.S) program has provided a variety of social, educational, and service activities to a small group of multicultural women at RIT.  The D.I.V.A.S program was designed to achieve two interconnected objectives: to foster a support network for incoming multicultural women at RIT and to increase the retention of female students through mentorship, personal development, and successful academic progress.  The D.I.V.A.S program has grown to meet the need of the campus community and its members by seeking to increase gender diversity at RIT and by supporting female students majoring in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) through successful academic progress and development.


Men of Color, Honor, and Ambition (M.O.C.H.A) is a year-long program open to all undergraduate male students between their second and fifth academic years of study, but is specifically designed for male students of color. Students will participate in a series of monthly workshops offered by faculty, staff, and community leaders; foster a sense of community and bonding with each other and other male role models of color through social outings; and support their health awareness and development through their participation in wellness activities.


Women of Color, Honor and Ambition, is open to all female students who are in their second- through fifth-years of study at the university, with an emphasis on woman of color. It is a year-long program developed for historically underrepresented women in a predominately technical university to enhance leadership ability, build comradery, access to mentorship, and open networking opportunities.

Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP)

The New York State Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) is sponsored jointly through a grant from New York State Education Department and RIT. HEOP is committed to the recruitment and academic success of students with strong academic potential and personal initiative who would otherwise be excluded from higher education due to academic and economic disadvantages. The program provides academic support, financial assistance, and advocacy for eligible students in an effort to maximize their success.

I'm First

A first-generation college student is a student whose parent(s)/legal guardian(s) have not completed a bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university.  RIT’s I’m First program strives to ensure success for students who are the first in their family to attend college by providing mentorship opportunities and programming support.


McNair Scholars Program

The RIT Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program serves a diverse group of talented RIT second- and third-year students who are interested in pursuing post-baccalaureate education. The RIT McNair Scholars Program provides an enriching scholastic experience that prepares eligible scholars for graduate education with an emphasis on doctoral studies.

Multicultural Center for Academic Success (MCAS)

The Multicultural Center for Academic Success (MCAS) is committed to maximizing the academic potential and holistic development of students by creating an inclusive, student-centered environment. By keeping academics first and foremost, MCAS strives to become a nationally recognized model for academic excellence and student success.  There are numerous ways for any student to participate and engage with MCAS including personal advising, leadership development opportunities, cultural diversity education, and cultural programming. Specifically, students can participate in the:

  • MCAS Summer Bridge Program 
  • MCAS Affiliate Program

Native American Future Stewards Program

The Native American Future Stewards Program was established as a result of RIT's commitment to increasing the success rate and number of Native scholars (Native American, Alaska Native, and First Nations) in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) along with other areas of need in Indian country. The program partners with students and Tribal nations, organizations and corporations to create opportunities for Native scholars to develop professionally, personally and culturally.

NTID Step Up

Step Up is a multicultural program under RIT/NTID's Student Life Team dedicated to the academic success of  first-year Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, DeafBlind, and Deaf Disabled (DHHDBDD) students of color. Step Up students join a diverse community of their peers who share a common goal of academic success. Through community support and co-curricular programming, Step Up students receive access to the academic, financial, and personal resources needed to thrive at RIT.
