PhD Shorts: Coding Interview Preparation

"PhD Shorts" is a series intended to create an environment for graduate students to exchange knowledge and ideas. During meetings, we will have several short (~15min) talks by current PhD students, as well as invited experts on tools and resources relevant to graduate studies. 

In PhD Shorts: Coding Interview Preparation we will have two speakers discussing tips for facing Data Science and Software Engineer coding interviews. Our speakers - Niranjana Deshpande (PhD student at RIT, ex-intern at Amazon Web Services @22) and Andre Scholtz (Software Engineer at FAANG) will share their tips and interviewing experiences.

Graduate Student Community Engagement Event

Rochester Institute of Technology and University of Rochester graduate students have the opportunity to collaborate with Foodlink Community Kitchen, an organization that prepares thousands of meals each week for elementary and high school students in need. Volunteers will disassemble elaborate can structures and place them into their appropriate categories for transportation to Foodlink. Afterward, students are invited to Spot Coffee (200 East Avenue) for an optional social gathering.

AWARE-AI Trainees and other graduate students will learn about the principles of inclusive collaborative research, including how to identify, communicate, and resolve points of contention and approach others with diverse viewpoints and opinions in consensus-driven, humane ways that promote team-based problem-solving.

Hosted by the AWARE-AI NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program, this free workshop welcomes NRT Trainees and other RIT graduate students. The workshop requires registration.

New physics Ph.D. program in 2024 by RIT

Rochester Institute of Technology will begin offering a new Ph.D. in the fall of 2024 that is designed to prepare graduates to extend the frontiers of fundamental scientific knowledge and develop new advances in technologies at the forefronts of 21st century physics.

Interactive evening for graduate students at the DSA's Escape Room Event

Masters and PhD students came together to have a fun and interactive night at the Omega Escape Room followed by dinner at Neno's Gourmet Mexican Street Food on Sept 30th. "The most memorable part of the evening for me was when the Master's students whooped our (Ph.D students) behinds in the competitive escape room!" said Kevin Barkevich, DSA member and one of the organizers of the event. Plans for other similar graduate student social events are in the works.

DOE’s Office of Science Is Now Accepting Applications for Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Awards

The SCGSR program supports awards to outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE national laboratory or host site in collaboration with a DOE laboratory scientist — with the goal of preparing graduate students for scientific and technical careers critically important to the DOE Office of Science mission. Since its inception in 2014, the SCGSR program has provided support to over 870 graduate awardees from 155 U.S. universities to conduct thesis research at all 17 DOE national laboratories across the nation.

  • The Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) program is now accepting applications for the 2022 Solicitation 2 cycle
  • Applications are due 5:00pm Eastern Time on Wednesday, November 9, 2022
  •  Students Will Perform Graduate Thesis Research at National Laboratories
  • The research opportunity is expected to advance the graduate students’ overall graduate thesis while providing access to the expertise, resources, and capabilities available at the host DOE laboratories
  •  SCGSR is open to current Ph.D. students in qualified graduate programs at accredited U.S. academic institutions, who are conducting their graduate thesis research in targeted areas of importance to the DOE Office of Science

Urban Ecology in Sweden, Study Abroad Program

Students will examine examples of green infrastructure, sustainable design, and low-impact transportation systems in Sweden.

While in Sweden, students will participate in site visits, and hands-on workshops, and learn key practices that U.S. cities could adopt for more eco-friendly urban living.

Course Details:

ENVS 798 -  Urban Ecology (graduate, 3 credits)

Students will be enrolled in a spring 2023 course at RIT and travel to Sweden in early summer.

Open to all undergraduate majors (2nd year and above) and graduate students.

No pre-requisites.

Application deadline: October 16, 2022

RIT Education Abroad Travel Grants are available for this program ($500-$1,000). Students would be considered for one of these grants during the application process and awards are based on financial need.
