Reminders and Review

2026-2027 Academic Calendar

The 2026-2027 Academic Calendar includes all important dates, including breaks. Before booking a trip home for your student over a break, make sure your student checks their schedule for exams and project due dates. This information will be available in their course syllabi.

"Reading the syllabi is absolutely essential to passing a course. They have a ton of useful information about grading, attendance, and important dates that their professors will expect students to know."
-Stelle

Textbooks and Course Materials

Purchasing course materials is quick and easy through RIT’s online bookstore. Once your student signs in using their RIT login or Student ID, they will see a personalized page with their specific courses and required materials, making it easy to add items to their cart and check out.

Computer screen displaying the RIT course materials website with information about finding and purchasing required textbooks and course materials.

Course schedules and required materials lists will be available for students to review in early August.

If ordering more than two weeks before arriving on campus, we recommend having materials shipped to your home. Otherwise, ship them directly to your student's campus address.

Financial Aid Review

We encourage students to review their financial aid information in the Financial Aid and Scholarships section of eServices as soon as possible and prior to arriving on campus. Remember, students can grant you guest access to this information too!

To maximize your time on campus during Welcome Days, students and their families are encouraged to complete and submit any requested financial aid forms and documents during the summer. Most financial aid forms and documents are “live” and accessed, completed, and submitted via your student's account in eServices. If indicated, forms and documents that are not live may be uploaded securely on the Financial Aid website or delivered in person to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships during Welcome Days if an electronic submission is not authorized.

If you or your student has any questions, please reach out to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships at (585) 475-2186 or ritaid@rit.edu

Navigating the Transition

Parents of International Students

International Student Services (ISS) supports RIT's international students on F-1 and J-1 visas. ISS provides guidance on immigration requirements such as maintaining visa status, employment authorization, travel, and enrollment requirements, while also fostering community and connection through orientation and other programs and resources as students navigate life at RIT and in Rochester. The ISS team works to ensure students have the information and connections to resources they need to make informed decisions and make the most of their experience at RIT and in the US.

Parents and family members can join ISS Director Dr. Megan Kless for lunch on Monday, Aug. 17 at 12:30 p.m. Bring your questions and concerns, enjoy a delicious lunch, and gain insights into your student's university experience abroad. This event is for parents and family members only. During this time, new international students will be having lunch with their Peer Advisor Leaders (PALs) at a campus dining location as part of International Student Orientation.

Rochester Weather

Rochester experiences the whole range of seasons, so make sure your student has light summer clothing, warm winter clothing, and everything in between! Good winter clothing includes a heavy coat, winter boots, a hat, mittens, and scarves. Remember, however, that your student will not need winter clothes right away, so don’t stress out if it doesn’t get packed in August.

The Sentinel sculpture stands among snow-covered trees and bushes during winter on the RIT campus.

If your student will have a car on campus, it’s good to keep a small shovel and an ice scraper in the trunk.

If you are from a warm climate, don’t fear-there are many ways to have fun in the cold months! For example, sledding, skating, hot chocolate, and one of our favorite campus traditions — FreezeFest.

"Pack layers! Rochester has unpredictable weather that can swing from 30 degrees in the morning to 60 later in the day. Neither of those temperatures are particularly comfortable if you’re not dressed for it. Also consider a collapsible umbrella… that’s saved my life a couple times."
-Emmett

Shipping Items to Campus

If you plan to ship items to campus before move-in, you have two options:

You can mail items directly to RIT using the address below. Please note that the campus post office experiences a high volume of activity on move-in days and Orientation week, and it can take time for your student to receive their items. It is best not to ship things that will be needed immediately, like bedding.

Student Name
Building, Room #
43 Greenleaf Court
Rochester NY 14623

You can ship items to The UPS Store which is located just a couple of minutes away from campus. For a nominal fee, a student/parent can sign up for the service and start sending packages throughout the summer up until Saturday, August 15 to the UPS Store. They will store an unlimited number of items until they are either picked up or delivered to campus.

Goodbye, Goodbuy!

Goodbye, Goodbuy! is a student-run initiative that provides students the opportunity to furnish dorms and apartments at affordable prices. Last spring during move-out week, Goodbye, Goodbuy! collected goods left behind from students, which will be on sale during Orientation week. Inventory includes items such as: furniture, clothing, fans, lamps, fridges, televisions, and speakers, as well as items that students might have forgotten to bring to campus (hangers, school supplies, and kitchenware). This year’s sale will be in the Gene Polisseni Center on Monday, Aug. 17, and Tuesday, Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Wednesday, Aug. 19, and Thursday, Aug. 20 from 12 to 4 p.m.

Students browse donated clothing and household items during RIT's Goodbye, GoodBuy collection and reuse program.

Let's Talk About It

What winter activities do you want to explore in Rochester?

Especially if your student will be new to cold weather, encourage them to try winter activities! And pack plenty of warm clothing.

What things from home can you not live without?

It’s good to pack some items that make it feel like home, but remind your student that dorm rooms are not huge and it’s best to pack light!
