AWARE-AI NRT: Workshop on Building a Foundation for Inclusive Research

When: October 31, 2022, 1 pm - 3:30 pm

Where: Louise Slaughter House

The AWARE-AI NRT workshop on Building a Foundation for Inclusive Research is facilitated by Dr. Taj Smith, Director of Diversity Education.

Hosted by the AWARE-AI NSF Research Traineeship (NRT) Program, this workshop welcomes NRT Trainees and other RIT graduate students. It will deepen understanding of an inclusive mindset to research in self-reflective scenarios exploring equity, microaggressions, imposter syndrome, epistemic violence, cultural relevance, etc.

This workshop requires registration. Please register by emailing awareainrt@rit.edu.

Into the ROC: Long Acre Farms

Saturday 10/22/22
10:30-2:30pm

This unique farm is a farm market, corn maze, and ice-cream shop all in one! This the perfect way to celebrate fall in Greater ROC.

All students will receive a "Barnbuster Ticket", which includes access to the corn maze and all additional activities at the farm. Two private campfires will be accessible with smores to make and enjoy!

This is a free event and transportation is provided!

Leadership Retreat: Omega Escape Room

Saturday 10/22/22
10:30-2:30pm

Leadership Retreat is a fun and interactive program that takes place off campus and encourages you to reflect on leadership skills you use during a series of engaging activities. This one-day event not only helps in understanding what skills you use as a leader in an everyday setting, it also helps you to recognize the skills you want to acquire and develop.

For our October Leadership Retreat we will be traveling to the Omega Escape Room Rochester. 

This is a free event and transportation is provided!

NTID Career Fair helps deaf, hard-of-hearing students and alumni find co-ops, full-time jobs

More than 30 employers returned to the RIT/NTID campus since the start of the pandemic to recruit a new cohort of talented deaf and hard-of-hearing students and alumni for open co-op or full-time positions.

The NTID Career Fair, held Oct. 6 in Lyndon Baines Johnson Hall, featured local, regional, and national employers including Merck, PNC Financial Services, General Dynamics, Procter & Gamble, Pfizer, FEMA, CooperVision, and Naval Research Laboratory, among others.

Researching at the intersection of computing and accessibility

Saad Hassan believes that accessibility should be a primary focus of technological innovation, not an afterthought. He recently received a grant from language-learning company Duolingo to fund his doctoral thesis on look-up systems for unfamiliar signs in languages like American Sign Language. He has also researched live captioning, biases in natural language processing systems, language learning, and mental health.

Fulbright Scholar presents research in Ireland on circular economy in consumer electronics

Constanza Berron, a Fulbright Scholar from Argentina, went to Ireland to present her research on the circular economy in e-waste management. Berron, a master’s student in sustainable systems, assisted with research performed by RIT faculty members Nabil Nasr, associate provost for Academic Affairs and director of Golisano Institute for Sustainability, and Michael Thurston, a research faculty member in the Center for Remanufacturing and Resource Recovery, as well as Kyle Parnell, a Ph.D. student in sustainability.

Interested in designing posters? 2023 Graduate Education Week Poster Design Contest is still accepting enteries!

Graduate students are invited to create a design for this academic year’s Graduate Education Week that celebrates the creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial research of RIT graduate students. This year’s theme is One World: Fusing Science, Technology, Art, and Engineering.

Eligibility: 

  • Current RIT graduate students

  • One entry created per graduate student or a team of 2 graduate students

Prize: $250 VISA Gift Card

The submission deadline is Friday, October 28, 2022, at 11:59 PM EST.
