Captionist

Job Summary: 

Perform real-time captioning service in classes and meetings for deaf and hard-of-hearing persons.    
 
Duties & Responsibilities:

• Facilitates communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and hearing individuals by entering spoken words into a captioning device for students and staff in educational settings.
• Maintains captioning device and software and transports equipment through out the building(s) as needed.
• Reports to teachers any significant behavioral or academic observations of any student whom they work with and informs teachers of specific student needs; including the physical environment of students such as the adequacy of lighting and the appropriateness of seating arrangements, etc.
• Prepares for captioning by reviewing educational materials and assists teachers with other related classroom activities when appropriate.
• Participates in IEP meetings and reviews to address areas needed for improvement in facilitating the communication process of deaf or hard of hearing students and other issues related to deaf and hard of hearing students.
• Performs additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements: 
 
Up to one year specialized or technical training beyond high school in computers, with an emphasis on real-time captioning techniques preferred, or any combination of equivalent education and experience.  Keyboarding speed of 60-70 wpm.
