AWARE-AI NRT: Workshop on Democracy, Justice, and AI

Facilitator: Irina Mikhalevich, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy at RIT

AWARE-AI Trainees and other graduate students will consider the moral dimensions of human sensing AI in democratic societies and will cover topics such as (i) the potential of AI systems to contribute to or perpetuate unjust social schemes (e.g., race or gender-based inequalities) or to pose threats to civil liberties (e.g., violation of privacy); and (ii) AI’s potential as a destabilizing force in civil society (e.g., through the erosion of trust by system behaviors that are not explainable to end users).

Security Risk Advisors sponsors scholarships for ‘red team’ cybersecurity students

Security Risk Advisors, a cybersecurity consulting firm, is sponsoring $125,000 in scholarships for RIT students interested in “red team” cybersecurity, also known as offensive security.

Security Risk Advisors (SRA) has committed to annually sponsoring $25,000 in scholarships for the next five years. Each year, four students will be awarded the $5,000 “SRA RITSEC Red Team Scholarship.” An additional $5,000 per year will be provided for selected students to pay for a premier red team certification.

RIT becomes test site for Yamaha immersive audio technology

Sungyoung Kim’s Applied and Innovative Research for Immersive Sound Lab (AIRIS) at RIT became a test site to explore future capabilities of one of Yamaha’s newest technologies, the Active Field Control System (AFC). Kim and his students will help develop next-phase improvements to the high-tech audio system.

“I was approached by Yamaha to discuss the future of this technology. The first step was to adapt all the Yamaha technology into our lab. That was phase one,” said Kim, an associate professor of audio engineering technology in RIT’s College of Engineering Technology, who has a background in developing immersive audio systems that enhance sound in modern spaces.

US Air Force Research Laboratory representatives visit RIT 

RIT welcomed representatives from the Air Force Research Laboratory, Griffiss Institute, and Spaceforce to meet with faculty and PhD students from the NanoPower Research Labs (NPRL) at RIT. Representative, faculty, and student work was shared and presented with the intent of finding ways to collaborate through research opportunities, co-ops, and research funding.

Graduate students are invited to create a design for this academic year’s Graduate Education Week that celebrates the creative, innovative, and entrepreneurial research of RIT graduate students. This year’s theme is One World: Fusing Science, Technology, Art, and Engineering.

Eligibility: 

  • Current RIT graduate students

  • One entry created per graduate student or a team of 2 graduate students

Prize: $250 VISA Gift Card

The submission deadline is Friday, October 28, 2022, at 11:59 PM EST.
