Presented by Doris Adamek, Daughter of Survivor

On September 3, 1939 the first sea battle of World War II occurred when a German U-boat mistakenly sunk a British passenger ship, the SS Athenia. Rochestarian John Garland survived the sinking, and his daughter, Doris Adamek, shares her father's story based on his harrowing first-hand account of this prelude to WWII. Doris, a lifelong Rochesterian, nursed in the 50s, raised children in the 60s and 70s, and currently is a leader of innovative programs for seniors.
