HISTORY OF RIT

Three primary collections, RIT Archives, the NTID History and Deaf Studies Archive and the RIT Art Collection make up RIT Archive Collections. The mission of the department is to collect and preserve original documents, printed materials, photographs, audio-visual materials, and memorabilia that document the history of RIT and to form a primary resource for the study of the history and development of RIT and its predecessors, the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute. The NTID History and Deaf Studies Archive exists to ensure that the cultural heritage and lives of the Deaf community is preserved in order to increase knowledge of this important history and strengthen identity formation and pride. and members of the RIT community may conduct research using the collections, and are invited to contact the department by phone or e-mail or visit in person. The staff is available to provide an overview of the collections and a tour of the facility. Faculty are encouraged to contact the archivist with ideas for special projects that introduce students to the collections. Students are welcome to use materials, singly or in groups, for term papers and special projects. The RIT Museum, located outside the archives on the 3rd floor of the library, is a permanent space for major exhibits related to the history of the university. The RIT Gallery for History and Art, located on the first floor of the library, features smaller exhibits of interest to the RIT community.

The web site http://library.rit.edu/depts/archives/ offers further information on the collections and current exhibitions.
