Overview
The Credit-Bearing Micro-Credential (CBMC) in Future Cities consists of three courses and a capstone project in the field of Future Cities. The curriculum will provide participants with a comprehensive view of smart city development, covering the technological, managerial, and analytical aspects crucial for success in this evolving landscape. Through the capstone project, learners will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-world case studies and hands-on projects, ensuring a practical understanding of the complexities involved in smart city initiatives. The CBMC integrates technology and leadership, preparing graduates to bridge the gap between technical teams and city management, thereby facilitating smoother implementation.
Program Goals
The Future Foresight Micro-Credential aims to:
- Develop participants' understanding of future foresight concepts, methodologies, and tools used to anticipate and prepare for emerging opportunities and challenges.
- Enhance participants' ability to analyze trends, drivers of change, uncertainties, and disruptions that may influence organizational and societal futures.
- Equip participants with advanced scenario planning techniques to evaluate multiple plausible futures and support strategic decision-making.
- Enable participants to formulate organizational future foresight frameworks that align strategic objectives with long-term sustainability and innovation goals.
- Promote the development of innovative and sustainable future strategies that contribute to institutional excellence, societal well-being, and national development priorities.
- Provide hands-on experience through applied projects that integrate future foresight methodologies with strategic planning practices to address real-world organizational challenges.
Stacking possibilities to progress from one certification to the next
Participants starting with the Professional Training Certification can potentially stack modules based on the modules-to-course mapping to complete higher-level certifications as follows:
Completing a Credit-Bearing Micro-Credential course
- Participants can take a single Micro-credential course through the Professional Training Certification.
- By completing the specific course, they would effectively complete the equivalent of one Micro-Credential course.
Completing the Credit-Bearing Micro-Credential Certification
- The Credit-Bearing Micro-Credential Certification requires completion of 3 courses.
- By completing the 3 specific courses and the associated capstone project, they would effectively complete the equivalent of Credit Bearing Micro-credential certification.
Progressing towards the Masters of Science in Professional Studies in Smart Cities
- The Master’s program consists of 9 courses plus a six-credit thesis.
- Participants could potentially complete up to 3 courses by stacking modules from the Professional Training Certification.
- They would need to complete 6 courses to cover the coursework portion of the master’s program.
- Additionally, they would still need to complete the thesis component (6 credit hours), which requires formal enrollment in the Master’s program.
Admission Criteria
If CBMC is a component of an accredited full degree: admission to CBMC should follow the entry requirements of the original program. A CBMC should be offered to learners who have satisfied any prerequisites of the course(s) constituting the CBMC.
If CBMC is stand-alone: HEIs should formulate proper admission requirements to the CBMC based on the requirement of its course(s). A CBMC should be offered to learners who have satisfied any prerequisites of the course(s) constituting the CBMC.
Enrollment in this Credit-Bearing Micro-Credential is open to all prospective students. This CBMC is specifically tailored for individuals seeking to obtain a comprehensive and rigorous education in the field of Future cities while maintaining their current employment, all while ensuring the highest level of quality. The required documents for the admission to the Micro-Credential in Future Cities program are the following:
- Passport Copy
- Emirates ID (only for UAE residents)
- Bachelor’s Degree Diploma and Transcript
- English Languages test (IELTS-5.5 Overall score or TOEFL IBT 71 or TOEFL PBT 530)
- One letter of recommendation
- CV
GPA Requirements
Full admission to the Micro-Credential program requires a cumulative GPA (CGPA) of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale or its established equivalent) in the applicant’s BS degree program. In addition, the Micro-Credential program may consider conditional admission (see sections below on Conditional Admission and Mature Entry Admissions).
English Proficiency Requirements
Students must achieve the minimum scores in standardized English exams. A minimum IELTS academic score of 5.5 or the equivalent of another standardized test is required of all students admitted to the Credit-Bearing Micro-Credential. Students who have completed their undergraduate education in an English-medium institution might be allowed admission into a graduate program at RIT Dubai without providing an IELTS academic score of 5.5 or equivalent. This exemption applies only to the students who have completed their schooling(K-12) and bachelor degree in English medium in a reference English-speaking country such as UK, USA, Australia or New Zealand.
Conditional Admission
A student with a CGPA of 2.5 or higher may be admitted conditionally for maximum 2 courses of a Credit-Bearing Micro-Credential.
Mature Entry Admissions
RIT Dubai may in some programs admit mature students who do not meet the minimum conditional admission CGPA requirement of 2.5 (but do have an above 2.0 CGPA) provided he/she passes the admission committee interview and the standard English test requirements. Related work experience can support a student's application.

Structures of City Systems
The course provides students with a comparative and analytical view of how different departments within a city are managed and work together. Students will learn about the role of city departments like security and safety, transportation, energy, water, sanitation and waste, how they work together today, and how they will need to interact in a smart city environment. This course will compare and contrast the collaborative nature of city government departments in various regions, including Europe, Asia, India, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, and students will analyze how technology can help build a more collaborative structure between these departments in cities of the future. Students will develop a foundational understanding of how urban departments are managed and will be managed in the future.

Technology Infrastructure for Smart Cities
The thinking within modern cities has changed dramatically in the past decade with the emergence of information and communication technologies (ICT). Previously, the existence of useful infrastructure was considered to be a beneficial but not essential factor in influencing development. Presently, a modern, flexible infrastructure is considered to be a requirement for any modern city. Its absence is a sign of underdevelopment. This course presents current and future ICT development along with techno-economic deployment scenarios and provides breadth in understanding the limits and potential of information and communication technologies.
