The increasing concerns about environmental sustainability and energy efficiency calls us to take immediate action. Utilizing green energy and smart technology in residential centers and buildings can significantly mitigate this problem. To address this concern, we propose the design and development of an integrated smart home system that optimizes energy production and usage, promotes sustainable living with intuitive mobile applications that can efficiently manage the sustainable home functions.
The project involves using solar PV, inverters and batteries to generate and manage clean energy to meet the required energy demands. Successful completion of the project involved several phases such as: the problem identification and formulation phase, planning, research and analysis phase, system design, smart applications design phase, system integration phase and the testing phase.
This project represents an execution of all the phases with the integration of smart applications with IoT devices in the home infrastructure. This includes the use of the Raspberry Pi microcontroller as the brain of the energy management system. The project results demonstrate that the integration of renewable energy sources and smart applications can be reliably used in a sustainable day-to-day living.
