Dr. Crane specializes in forensics, focusing primarily on the intersection of substance use and violent or aggressive behavior. He is jointly affiliated with the Rochester Institute of Technology and the Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Medical

Dr. Crane’s primary research involves developing and evaluating brief and adjunctive interventions that meet individualized needs to increase treatment compliance and reduce recidivism rates among partner violence perpetrators. Interventions include efforts to develop intrinsic motivation to change maladaptive behaviors and integrated treatments addressing comorbid conditions that may interfere with attempts to modify behavior, such as a post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use diagnosis.

In a related area of study, Dr. Crane’s research aims to improve upon our understanding of the proximal, causal effects of acute alcohol use on partner violent behavior using a multi-methodological approach that integrates cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experimental research.  A subset of this effort has been devoted to the development and evaluation of ecologically valid screening measures and  technology to assess alcohol-related partner violence.

Dr. Crane’s research often involved multiple levels of analysis to assess dyadic processes as they relate to relationship violence at the daily level.
