The environment has been a focus of my work following the explosion on the Deep Water Horizon in 2010 and the subsequently oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. I was simultaneously intrigued and horrified by the images of the oil moving through the water. This led to a focus on extreme weather conditions mostly brought about due to climate change. Water contamination, floods, drought, and fires were regularly in the news and subsequently in my artwork.

While researching information on climate change, I discovered information on Blue Carbon Ecosystems. This presented a hopeful direction for this work.

"Coastal ecosystems are some of the most productive on Earth. They provide us with essential ecosystem services, such as coastal protection from storms and nursery grounds for fish. We also know that they provide another integral service - sequestering and storing "blue" carbon from the atmosphere and oceans and hence are an essential piece of the solution to global climate change." - The Blue Carbon Initiative
