Yewande Abraham
College of Engineering Technology
Dr. Yewande Abraham is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering Technology Environmental Management and Safety at the College of Engineering Technology. Her research interests include advancing construction and engineering education and promoting sustainable and smart built environments.
In her research on construction and engineering education, Dr. Abraham is focused on integrating sustainability concepts into Civil Engineering Technology courses using the Engineering for One Planet (EOP) framework. The aim of the EOP framework is to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge to address challenges facing the built environment through a sustainability lens. This work is supported by the American Society for Engineering Education. Also, Dr. Abraham received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant in collaboration with researchers from other institutions to develop a virtual reality-based immersive learning environment for middle school students to learn data sensing and computational thinking in construction engineering while encouraging them to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers.
Dr. Abraham is also part of a team at RIT working on a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) grant to develop curriculum on standards education in infrastructure improvement and resilience. The goal is to ensure that students build confidence in applying relevant standards for sustainable building and infrastructure resilience.
In her research on smart and sustainable built environments, Dr. Abraham investigates the impact of indoor environmental conditions on occupant comfort and productivity in green-certified and non-green-certified buildings. Indoor environmental quality has important implications on occupant health, well-being, and building energy use so it is critical to ensure that key stakeholders make informed decisions about building design, construction, and operations.
Dr. Abraham holds an MEng in Civil Engineering from Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Architectural Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in the United States. She has published 17 conference proceedings and 8 peer-reviewed journal articles.
