Toyota Production Systems Lab
Fall 2008 Newsletter

The Toyota Production Systems lab was founded in 2006 with support from
the Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America. The mission
of this facility is to educate students in state-of-the-art production
systems. This facility supports activities for audiences that include
students at the following levels: middle and high school, engineering
freshmen, senior and graduate, as well as undergratuate students from other
disciplines.
Residing in a 1,600 sq. ft. room in the Kate Gleason College of
Engineering, this laboratory currently features a reconfigurable production
line with storage areas and kitting areas, conveyors, and conveyance
operations. Emphasis is placed on: (1) understanding the fundamental
behavior of production systems, (2) problem solving methodologies and
improvement processes, and (3) the concepts and philosophies of TPS.
Once fully developed, the laboratory will be capable of addressing
issues, technologies and philosophies from a global perspective that
incorporates supplier/customer supply chain interactions, production
control, storage, conveyance, assembly, among others.
