Microelectronic Engineering Optics and Photovoltaics Lab

Microelectronic Engineering has fabricated solar cells at RIT since 1979 and continue to research ways to reduce the manufacturing cost and improve the efficiency and yield. Students in our long standing Photovoltaic course learn the basic device physics of solar cells, the manufacturing of the cells, their testing and evaluation, the creation of panels and the power electronics needed to connect to the grid. In this lab cells are illuminated and electrical characterization performed. The lab is also equipped with optics benches, laser sources, optical components, filters, detector and other tools needed to build and evaluate complete optical and opto-electronic systems.
